A luxury pea coat, designed for tailoring.

Given how diverse and fluid modern wardrobes are, pea coats are an incredibly useful piece of menswear – versatile enough for smart jackets and trousers, but also jeans and knitwear. They're rarely designed with tailoring in mind, though, usually too short to cover a suit jacket, and too small in the shoulder and sleeve.

The PS Bridge Coat is based on the standard pea coat made by Private White VC, but adds over two inches in length, so it's long enough to go over any traditional suit jacket.

It also adds some traditional design details: the buttons up the front run in sweeping, flattering lines more usually seen on overcoats, narrowing slightly from the hips into the waist, bowing outwards around the chest, and narrowing again at the collar.

Other details include a large internal 'poacher's' pocket for anything bulky, and two slit pockets in the chest, the left of which can be accessed even when the coat is fully buttoned up.

Sizing
  • The Bridge Coat is slim fitting, so depending on your body shape – and whether you'll wear a tailored jacket underneath it regularly – you may want to size up.
  • Measurements are given flat, going across or up and down, rather than as circumferences.
  • Simon's size: 5 (Large). This is the hardest of the coats to fit – it's made with a slim waist and wide shoulders, so it works really well if you're slim, but can be tricky otherwise. Most of the time we advise people to size up, and Simon does the same these days: he used to take a 4, which is what the original photos show, but now prefers a little more space.
  • Check the measurements, but expect to want a size up from your other coats.

Material & Care
  • 620g, 80% wool 20% cashmere, with natural stretch that helps it work over a jacket
  • Pockets lined with 100% cashmere
  • Two-hole, unpolished horn buttons – a detail rarely seen outside Savile Row, and a favourite of Simon's
Simon says

“Perhaps most importantly of all (for me), the materials are luxurious but understated. So distinctive as that sweeping front edge is, the effect is subtle because the buttons are dark and matte: unpolished dark-brown horn set on deep navy cloth.

It hopefully achieves my usual aim with clothing: being stylish and elegant, but in so subtle a manner that no passer-by can point to its cause.“

Readers say

"I picked this up from PWVC over the weekend and absolutely love it. The quality of the materials is superb, and – I have to say – a real bargain at this price point. It's not a cheap coat, but it is great value for money."
