This merino knit was designed as the most elegant option for a polo in warm weather. The high-performance material holds a smooth, smart look, while the collar is cut like a shirt collar for a smarter finish.

Worn with tailored linen trousers and loafers in summer – with a blazer or overshirt over the top if required – it's a strong option for an elegant warm-weather outfit.

Wool also dries quicker and holds odour less than cotton, both useful in hot weather, and retains its shape well – high-twist merino performs better than most alternatives as a result.

The polo has a higher, more structured collar than most, which frames the face and sits better under a jacket collar – closer to a smart shirt than a regular polo.

Made by Umbria Verde in Italy, who make some of the finest knitwear in the world and supply leading designer brands – visible in the flatness of the seams and the fineness of the fashioning.

• Weighs 150g, folds up small
• Made in Italy by Umbria Verde
• If in doubt, hand wash or dry clean. Hand washing is simple – soak in warm water with a little detergent for half an hour, as shown in our video here
• Can also be washed on a delicate/wool cycle, cool/30 degrees, with minimal spin
• Dry on a rack, do not tumble dry

For Simon, the most important point in the design was the material: "Cotton is the obvious material for summer, but it's often too soft and dense to be cool. Silk and cashmere can be warm too. A high-twist merino, on the other hand, lets all the air through and has a nice dry touch."
