The perfect every day t-shirt, based on Japanese circular-knitted T-shirts: robust, superior touch, only getting better with age.

Details

Japanese circular-knitted T-shirts are excellent: robust, with a superior touch, only getting better with age. But because they're made as a tube, they have no shape – usually short and square, which is rarely flattering and can lead to them getting wider over time.

Simon had long been a fan of these T-shirts but was frustrated by the fit, so worked with Allevol to make their classic heavy-duty T-shirt, but tapered for a more flattering everyday shape.

Made in Japan from 100% raw American cotton, using a 14-count yarn – about twice as heavy as a regular tee, and a good weight for anything but the very hottest or most humid summers.

The design was also tweaked to give a higher back neck, for a more flattering fit, and a bound collar with triple stitching, to stop it growing over time.

See the full article for further details and the story behind the collaboration here.

Sizing
  • The T-shirts fit like any regular tee in the body (from Sunspel for example) which all have a slight taper
  • The only difference you will notice is that the chest is a little larger, and the shoulder seam slightly dropped. Both of which Simon finds quite flattering
  • In the images, Simon is wearing a Medium and Taka is wearing a Small. However, Simon also wears a Large, and the nice thing about the taper is that it doesn’t look too big. He is pictured in a white Large (with jeans) and then a Medium (with chinos) in two subsequent images here.
  • If you are between sizes, we recommend taking the larger size
Size X-small Small Medium Large X-large XX-large

Material & Care
  • 100% American raw cotton, spun into a 14-count yarn
  • Heavier than most mainstream T-shirts, common among Japanese makes designed for heavy duty and to retain shape
  • The weight is fine throughout summer; you may notice the difference in a tropical country, or at 35 degrees and above
  • Circular knitted in Osaka, Japan, before being cut and sewn at the sides
  • Care like a dress shirt: wash cool and hang dry
  • The density gives a natural stretch that adapts to your body during the day, similar to denim – a slight stretch after washing can accelerate this
  • Little shrinkage (up to a centimetre in length and width)
Simon says

"I've always loved Japanese circular-knitted T-shirts – they have so much body, and such a nice hand compared to regular tees. By comparison, mainstream T-shirts can feel flimsy, almost like underwear."

Readers say

"I just received my t-shirts, and I have to say: my hunt for the perfect tee has stopped. You have designed it. The wider shoulder and tapered waist accentuates a more athletic build. I can't wait for the restock, and hopefully a version in grey as well."
