The dark navy Donegal overcoat is a heritage piece of outerwear, born out of the need for a versatile coat that could be worn with jeans for a walk, or tailoring to the office. 

Details

The PS Donegal Coat was designed as a versatile coat that could be worn with jeans for a walk, or tailoring to the office – something to be thrown on almost without thought, yet still rigorously designed to flatter the wearer.

A higher collar frames the face; an insert in the collar keeps it up; a throat latch protects the neck but sits elegantly when not in use.

The tweed is spun especially in the county of Donegal, Ireland, at the last remaining mill that makes the yarn, before being woven in Lancashire and manufactured into the coat by Private White VC in Manchester.

The pattern on this version is herringbone because it creates visual interest (also helps with the versatility) without being a bigger pattern. And the yarn is a slightly lighter merino than the previous Donegals - 680g rather than 720g. This makes it a touch smoother (easier with suits) and a very versatile weight. 

Sizing
  • The coat is true to size – take your normal size, roughly Small for a 48 chest, Medium for 50, and so on. Unlike the Bridge Coat, it isn't slim in fit, so there's no need to size up.
  • Relaxed fit, cut to finish below the knee (easy to shorten if required).
  • Have a close look at the measurements below if you're unsure, and compare to a coat you already own if in doubt.
  • Simon is six foot tall and usually wears a size-50-chest jacket. He wears a Medium here.
  • Shoulder measurement is taken down the top seam on the sleeve, from the collar to the end of the sleeve – it's not possible to measure from the end of the shoulder, as it's a raglan.

Alterations: the coat is cut a little longer than most modern overcoats, which Simon considers more practical and flattering, but it's made to be easy to alter.

  • Can be shortened by a tailor by a good four inches without interrupting the balance
  • Can be lengthened by around 5cm
  • Sleeves can be lengthened by around 4cm, or shortened by up to 1.5cm easily – more than that requires moving the wrist strap, which is a small job for a tailor
  • The body can be narrowed, though this isn't recommended, as the style is meant to be roomy

“It's casual, yet luxurious. The wool is warm yet malleable, the two-hole horn buttons recall Savile Row tailoring, and the pockets are deliberately lined on both sides with cashmere, to warm the hands.

Donegal tweed is so pleasing in the texture it creates, yet subtle. There's slubbiness in there and colour variation when you look carefully, but it never feels as old-fashioned as a big windowpane."
