This is our first really casual shirt on PS: a two-pocket chambray work shirt, modelled off old US Navy models but with a shape and collar that works with tailoring. 

Designed in collaboration with Buck Mason, it is cut a little roomier in the body than our other shirts so that it can be worn tucked or untucked, with jeans, with shorts in summer, or under a jacket during the week. It was developed in part in response to the readers who said, in discussion of untucked shirts, how few good ones there were.

Our focus was to perfect the collar and colour of the shirt. As with the Friday Polo, the collar sits lower than on our other shirts, but it is still high enough at the front to stand clear of a lapel. The blue is close to the shade of an oxford button-down, and the buttons are white rather than blue, as they are easier to wear with other things. The side vents are raised and the hips brought in, so the shirt doesn't look bulky untucked.

It took years to get right. Our first attempts, with suppliers in Italy, struggled to get the wash right on such a sturdy shirt, so we moved to Buck Mason, who are much more experienced in making this style. Made for us in chambray from Kaihara, the focus is robust materials and a simple make, so there is none of the hand-sewing on the other PS shirts, but for us this suits the style of shirt.

Sizing
  • A comfortable fit, bigger in the body and sleeves than other PS shirts
  • If you need a recommendation, we would size down from your usual PS shirt or knit size, but please compare the measurements below with a shirt you already own
  • Simon wears a Medium and has a 41-inch chest. He usually wears a Large in other PS shirts
  • Lucas wears an XX-Large and has a 46-inch chest. He could happily wear an X-Large. He wears an XX-Large in other PS shirts, though they are trimmer.
